Patrick Robin alleged that at the 1987 Rugby World Cup British Officials closed ranks to prevent referees from outside he British Isles from refereeing the final stages of the competition. He alleged that Derek Bevan gave South Africa "the benefit of the doubt four times" in the semi-final against France. After the tournament, Louis Luyt (President of SARFU) tried to present Derek Bevan with a watch worth £1,000.
